What is a COLD ?
- The common cold is a viral infection caused by any one of
over 200 viruses.
- Colds occur throughout the year but are most common in late winter and
fall.
- The average child has about six colds per year.
Symptoms of a COLD:
- Runny nose
- Red eyes
- Sneezing
- Sore throat
- Dry cough |
- Headache
- General body aches
- Possible low-grade fever
- Tired or "run-down" feeling |
Prevention of a COLD
- A good diet, adequate sleep and exercise
helps keep the immune system strong.
- Hands should be washed well and frequently to reduce the possibility of spreading the
virus.
- Hands should be kept away from the nose, eyes, and mouth and the mouth should
be covered when coughing or sneezing.
- Close contact with people who have a cold should be avoided.
- Smokers should stop smoking.
Treatment of a COLD
- There is no cure for the common cold.
- Plenty of rest and drinking adequate amounts of fluid are both very important
in treating a cold.
- Prescription and non-prescription products only help alleviate or reduce the
symptoms of a cold.
- Analgesics (pain relievers) help relieve body aches, sore throat and reduce
fever. (Specific products may be
recommended by a physician or pharmacist.)
- Expectorants help improve chest congestion and mucous drainage. (Specific products may be
recommended by a physician or pharmacist.)
- Nasal decongestants help relieve nasal stuffiness. (Specific products may be
recommended by a physician or pharmacist.)
- Cough suppressants help relieve the dry cough associated with a cold. (Specific products may be
recommended by a physician or pharmacist.)
- Antihistamines may have some effect in relieving a runny nose and watery eyes.

- Antibiotics will not cure or prevent a cold nor will antibiotics help treat
the symptoms of a cold.
