Consumer Trends: Demand for Transparency and Natural Products Continues to Grow

Now more than ever, consumers are seeking to take ownership of their personal health. A study conducted by Social Nature ( a natural products resource) about consumer habits during and after the pandemic found the following:


• Participants were asked to list their top 10 sources of comfort and joy during the pandemic -Self-Care was the 2nd most popular answer with 46% of respondents listing it.

• Participants were asked about their top 5 permanent lifestyle changes – taking more preventative health measures was the 2nd most popular answer with 44% of respondents listing it.

• Participants were asked about their top 5 permanent shopping habit changes – continuing to buy healthier products was the 2nd most popular answer with 45% of participants listing it.

As consumers continue to remain conscious of how they treat their bodies, demand for natural products has continued to accelerate at a rapid pace – especially when it comes to food, medicine, and personal care items. Top reasons for this shift include the perceived safety of natural products (especially for preventative treatments), environmental awareness (sustainability), increased knowledge about our body’s holistic needs, as well as the need for greater transparency regarding ingredients and material sourcing. When it comes to self-health products, consumer focus has shifted away from traditional allopathic medicines and is now focused on natural, OTC products that can help maintain or improve overall health without the use of harsh chemicals or hidden ingredients. While the exact specifications on what constitutes a “natural” product may vary, there are some main differentiations. Most importantly, the product must contain ingredients that occur, or are produced from, natural sources. This may include botanical, biological, or mineral-based materials. Additionally, there is a premium on products that contain a limited number of added artificial ingredients. Increased concern over harmful chemicals and synthetics has resulted in consumers looking to replace these items with safer, equally effective ingredients that are gentler and healthier for their bodies.
